The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B.
Tales of Passion, Tales of Woe
The Last Great Dance on Earth

I love this author's voice and the structure of these epistolary novels. Written as though from the personal journals of Josephine Bonaparte, Sandra Gulland brings to life the woman we all know as Josephine, but who began life in Martinique as an island girl named Rose (Napoleon changed her name).

Her trials (did you know she went to prison during the French Revolution?), her loves (did you know she was married and had two kids before Bonaparte?), and how she helped shape history are all revealed in the most intimate way.
I was particularly fascinated by the (often overlooked) sequence of events that propelled a Corsican named Napoleon into the role of the Emperor of France. The author takes us on the journey with Josephine and reveals all in this well-crafted trilogy.

Although the books are twenty years old now, they are timeless and an enjoyable Historical Fiction read. They were recommended by my friend, Pam Azar Hunsaker, and I admit I devoured them!Sandra Gulland has two more books out that are set in the Court of Louis XIV, the Sun King. I am ordering them today: Mistress of The Sun and The Shadow Queen.
